COMMENTARY ISAIAH

ISAIAH - CHAPTER 14
(14:24-27)
AN ORACLE CONCERNING ASSYRIA
Vs. 24-27: The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as
I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have
purposed, so shall it stand: That I will break the Assyrian
in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then
shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart
from off their shoulders. This is the purpose that is
purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is
stretched out upon all nations. For the LORD of hosts hath
purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is
stretched out, and who shall turn it back?
1. The Lord has sworn that His plan and purpose will not
be thwarted; it will be fulfilled, (vs. 24; 46:10; Psa.
33:11; Prov. 21:30; comp. Acts 2:23; 4:28; Eph. 1:11; Heb.
6:17; Rom. 11:33-36).
2. He has purposed to "break the Assyrian" (Isa. 10:12;
30:31; 31:8; 37:7, 36-38) in the land of promise - Jehovah's
own land, (vs. 25a; Ezek. 38:21; 39:2, 4).
3. When the Lord accomplishes this purpose the yoke of
the Assyrian will be broken - liberating His people from
bondage and servitude, (vs. 25b; cf. 9:4; 10:27; Nahum
1:13).
4. The Lord has a definite purpose for the whole earth,
(23:9; Zeph. 3:6-9); His outstretched hand will truly bring
judgment to the nations, (Ex. 15:6, 12; etc.).
5. His purpose cannot be annulled - nor shall any
successfully resist His outstretched hand, (vs. 27; 43:13; 2
Chron. 20:6; Dan. 4:24-35).
