COMMENTARY ISAIAH

ISAIAH - CHAPTER 12
MILLENNIAL THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE FOR
MESSIANIC DELIVERANCE
Vs. 1-2: REMEMBERING GOD'S JUDGMENT AND RESTING IN HIS
COMFORT
And in that day thou shalt say, 0 LORD, I will praise
thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned
away, and thou comfortedst me, Behold, God is my salvation: I
will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my
strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
1. "In that day" refers to the coming millennial era (the
day of salvation) wherein the Messianic Deliverer of Israel
will rule in righteousness on, and over, the whole earth, (2
Pet. 3:8; Isa. 26:1; 60:18).
2. Judgment for the once-rebellious nation will then be
past, (40:1-2; 54:7-10; Psa. 30:5) - the anger of Jehovah
having been turned away, so that His hand is no longer
"stretched out" against them.
3. Praise, rooted in comfort, trust and the banishment of
fear, will be on every tongue, (comp. 25:1; Psa. 9:1; Zech.
14:20-21).
4. All Israel will then recognize God as their Deliverer
(33:2; 45:17; 62:11); Jehovah Himself will be acknowledged as
their strength, and the object of their song, (Ex. 15:2; Psa.
118:14).
Vs. 3-6: A HYMN OF PRAISE
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of
salvation. And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD,
call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make
mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the LORD, for he
hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.
Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great Is the
Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.
1. With what holy delight will those who have learned to
trust the Lord then draw the water of life, liberally and
freely, from the inexhaustible "wells of salvation", (Jn.
4:10; 7:37-38; Isa. 41:18; 55:1; Psa. 42:1; Jer. 2:13; Rev.
22:17).
2. Not only will they "praise the Lord" (24:15-16;
42:12); they will also urge others:
a. To "call upon (proclaim) His name", (Psa. 105:1;
99:6; 22:4-5; I Sam. 12:18; Ex. 15:25; 32:30-34).
b. To declare His marvellous works among the people,
(Psa. 145:4-7).
c. And to advertise the exaltation of His name,
(24:14-16a).
3. For excellent deeds, known to all the earth, they are
commanded to "sing unto the Lord!" (Zeph. 3:14; Isa. 42:10;
49:13; Ex. 15:1; Zech. 2:10; Psalm 98:1).
4. And those who inhabit Jerusalem are to exult in "the
Holy One of Israel", Who now dwells within her gates,
(52:9-10; 45:1; Ezek. 48:35; Jer. 3:17).
5. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit, the Lord's
church already has the privilege of experiencing a foretaste
of this blessedness - limited only by our lack of faith,
(Rom. 14:17-18).
a. The word of God has a far-reaching applicability
though we must never confuse application with primary
interpretation.
b. Whoever trusts God, in any age, may confidently
sing: "I will trust and not be afraid!" (Psa. 46; Prov.
3:3-5; Heb. 13:5-6).
