6. In understanding God’s purpose, God’s people glorify Him.
Read your bible and pray brethren, read your bible and pray.
Acts 11:1-18 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. 2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, 3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. 4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying, 5 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: 6 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. 8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth. 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. 10 And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven. 11 And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me. 12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house: 13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; 14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. 16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? 18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
After the resurrection of Jesus Christ the church at Jerusalem was not doing as Jesus had instructed. God then uses Peter, who has been prepared by a vision, to preach the word to the gentiles. Peter will be the witness for God regarding the gentiles, and salvation, to the church at Jerusalem, and it is this very situation that has prompted this speech by Peter.
It is clear, as this reading began, some at the church at Jerusalem were keepers of the law, which is a problem if that person, or persons, believed they were made righteous by the deeds of the law instead of through Christ. To compound this situation, this group, and the church at Jerusalem, was not taking the gospel to all nations as Jesus had instructed.
Matt. 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
It is interesting to note throughout the scriptures that many of God’s people, when challenged by the Spirit of God and convicted, have a tendency to return to their former beliefs, turtle into them, and then try to move the old forward. Thereby missing that God is calling them forward, from the former understanding to a greater understanding, in service and knowledge. The old understanding is a foundation that has truth, but not the complete knowledge or the precise and correct knowledge (1922 epignosis); stagnation is the opposite of growth and is the result of sitting firmly and comfortably in our shell. God through His Spirit has issued a challenge, rise up in acceptance of that challenge and move forward toward precise and correct knowledge and a closer walk with God.
An example of this effect is the church at Jerusalem, each one had accepted Jesus as their Savoir, and had been baptized per the teachings of Jesus; but some stayed bound in the Mosaic law instead of moving forward in the teachings of Jesus, still revering the teachers of the law.
Another example is Israel and the golden calf in answer to the challenge of God on Mount Sinai. God said clearly, here I am, follow me, but a large part of Israel chose the god’s of Egypt. Thus, returning to their old beliefs and practices in the land of Egypt.
The challenge, in part, is to grow spiritually in knowledge: spiritual knowledge. Quit assuming that the old knowledge, based on earthly understanding, is the full extent of the knowledge of God.
- They held their peace and glorified God, saying, ... wow, we were wrong! Unfortunately that is not what was said, although it would be nice to see the people of God humble themselves from time to time and admit the possibility of being mistaken.
Acts 11:12-18 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting.
This is a big moment for Peter (Acts 10 is the full account). The previous six verses establish this as fact. Peter had lived his life in accordance with the teachings about clean and unclean. As such, Peter was uncomfortable with the vision and with his instructions from God; but God gave Peter no time to rationalize the matter, and Peter moved in faith to follow God’s instructions. Note ...
Verse 12: ... nothing doubting (Acts 10:20).
Is this relevant at all? Is this an issue for the people of God, especially for a servant as notable as Peter? Yes, yes, yes! IF it is written in the word of God then it is important whether we understand that or not.
Doubting = 1252 diakrino {dee-ak-ree'-no} Meaning: 1) to separate, make a distinction, discriminate, to prefer 2) to learn by discrimination, to try, decide 2a) to determine, give judgment, decide a dispute 3) to withdraw from one, desert 4) to separate one's self in a hostile spirit, to oppose, strive with dispute, contend 5) to be at variance with one's self, hesitate, doubt Origin: from 1223 and 2919; TDNT - 3:946,469; v Usage: AV - doubt 5, judge 3, discern 2, contend 2, waver 2, misc 5; 19
‘The Spirit bade me go with them without discriminating’. This is not a discussion about faith or the lack there of (too bad). This is a discussion about having a predetermined idea. This is the danger just addressed with regard to not rising to the challenge and moving forward in understanding and service to God. Under the Mosaic law the gentiles are unclean, Peter has not moved beyond the old; Peter needs to realize that through Jesus all mankind can have repentance unto life.
Verse 14-17: ... thou and thy house shall be saved.
It is interesting to consider Cornelius, in Acts 10:22 we learn that Cornelius is a just man that fears God. He is also a man whose prayers God heard (Acts 10:31). All of the actions of Cornelius show Him to be a man of faith, an equivalency that Peter himself makes ...
17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?
As God always has, He rewards faithfulness.
Verse 18: When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
Fantastic, God is glorified by the people of God as they see the purpose of God. Jesus instructed the disciples, that is, the church at Jerusalem, to carry the gospel to the nations, but those words seemed to be lost on the disciples; who have not moved beyond the old.
Think, suppose, be of the opinion (1392); the disciples now see the purpose of Jesus in this issue, as they should have all along, and seeing the purpose of God they see the glory of God.
The phrase, they held their peace and glorified God, saying … is also informative. We need to consider that glorifying God could mostly be non-verbal, after all it is a state of mind; think, suppose, be of the opinion (1392). They held their peace; could also be referring to the first three verses of the chapter where uninformed people were telling Peter all that he did wrong, were they now quiet, had they changed their minds? Is this that moment when a person realizes that their understanding and words have been mistaken; that moment when a person says (maybe to themselves), well, shut my mouth? Self, our vast stores of knowledge, and opinions, has to be quieted before a person can see and glorify God.
Hope this offers a possible explanation for the seeming contradiction between, ‘they held their peace’, and ‘saying’.
It has been pointed out that praise and worship are expressions of glorifying God. In this case, their praise for God, and His will for all mankind, is seen in their words, ‘Then hath God also to the gentiles granted repentance unto life’.
Acts 13:26-49 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. 27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. 28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. 30 But God raised him from the dead: 31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. 32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, 33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. 35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. 38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; 41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. 42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. 44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.
Some preliminary comments on verses 45-47: The attitude of the people of God, Israel, toward God is amazing to consider. They do not heed His word, they ignore His work, i.e. John the Baptist, Jesus, miracles, resurrection; and in the process ignore the salvation that He has sent.
Remember the leaders of the people of God after the resurrection of Lazarus? No praise, worship, or glory for God; instead, they fear for their place as the leaders of Israel.
Jn. 11:43-53 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. 47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. 48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. 49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. 51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; 52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. 53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
The answer of the people of God to a demonstration of the power of God, is to dispose of any evidence of what has taken place ...
Jn. 12:9-11 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
... or to deny it ever happened.
Matt. 28:9-15 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. 11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. 12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, 13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. 14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. 15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
Are the people of God like this today?
Verse 46: Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
This is a fascinating statement that should be considered by all that call themselves the people of God. Israel, the covenanted people of God (Romans 9:4-5) have rejected God the Father again, by rejecting Jesus; because of this God is rejecting them.
Acts 28:23-29 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. 29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
The salvation of God is sent to the gentiles and they will hear it; or as it is said in Acts 13:46; Israel put away the word spoken to them, judging themselves unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the gentiles.
How could the people of God reject the word of God? Do the people of God know what they are rejecting? Are the people of God comfortable in their beliefs? Does this seem strange, can the people of God reject the word of God, yes they can and yes they have. This is another reason that the Old Testament is left for the people of God today.
Verse 47: For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
It is cause for great joy on the part of the author to read this verse and consider this thought. The Father sees to the end, while mankind sees only to the next rise if the way is clear. Our Father planned from the beginning that all peoples of all nations could be saved (Genesis 12:3), and He knew His people long before their birth.
Thinking of the church at Jerusalem in Acts 10-11 & 15; the brethren thought they understood the things of God, but they were reading right over what was written, seeing only what they wanted to see, only the things that verified their understanding (confirmation bias).
Verse 48: And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
The author is glad to hear the 47th verse, it is such a blessing. The 47th verse is the cause for rejoicing in the 48th verse, the love of our Father, and His grace, has made a way for the people of all nations to have salvation. Open your eyes and see the glory of the word of God, reading from the word do you think, suppose, be of the opinion, that God is glorious? Do the people of God today know how special their salvation is?
7. The earth was lightened with his glory.
Revelation 18:1-4 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. 2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. 3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. 4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
An Angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. The point of interest is, the glory of the Angel lights the earth – what is this?
This makes one wonder as to the light. Is this a real light, like the sun? Or, is this light spiritual and heavenly in nature, that counter acts the darkness associated with satan? Interestingly the darkness associated with satan is not observed through the eyes of the flesh, and it is not like the darkness of night in appearance, the darkness associated with satan is a metaphor for something else. Therefore, it is reasonable to consider the light in this example as something other than a physical manifestation.
What could the light be? The book of John has a lengthy discussion of light and darkness in which it is early stated that light is the life of the age (zoe 2222), if light is life what is darkness, death? Acts 26:18 compares light and darkness to the power of God and the power of satan. In Romans 13:11-14 it is the works of darkness verses the armor of light, living honestly putting on the Lord Jesus Christ: instead of rioting, drunkenness, chambering, wantonness, strife and envying. But 2 Corinthians 4:4-6 says, light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ: associating light with knowledge and the author has the opinion that the darkness in this case is ignorance. Therefore, the light that lightens the earth when the angel comes down from heaven, could it be referring to something other than the physical manifestation of light?
Reminds the author of the Heavenly Beings, and Good and Evil Study. An important theme of that study is that there is a heavenly, or spiritual realm, that mankind cannot see nor understand. And in this heavenly, or spiritual realm, there are many different beings that exist.
The angel that comes down from heaven is a spiritual being, will this angel with great power that comes down from heaven and lights the earth with its glory be seen by the people of the flesh, who live in the physical realm? Or by people who are in the Spirit, living in the spirit?
Maybe the question should be, to whom does the angel speak? Is the angel come to speak to the people of the world or to the people of God, or just as a herald making a proclamation? Would the people of the world hear the voice of the angel, would they understand it if they heard it?
Note; it appears that every other reference to light in the book of Revelation is referring to the physical manifestation of light, which is quite at odds with the other book written by John. However, maybe a discussion is in order, some things might not be as they appear; Revelation 21:23-24 needs some prayerful meditation in this matter.
- Could the light be spiritual? Yes, the light could be a figure for something else. Describing things that happen in the spiritual realm in order to reach them that dwell in the physical realm. Should the people of God find a discussion of the spiritual realm disconcerting?
- Judgement completed, is the pronouncement. Revelation 18:1-3 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
- A warning, who is being warned? Remember that deep into the end times scriptures, God is still warning His people.
John 1:1-10 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
What is the light in this passage of scriptures? It definitely is not referring to light comparable to that which emanates from the sun. It is the fourth verse that tells us what the light is in this context; “... and the life was the light of men”.
The angel lightens the world, is this maybe the final opportunity for the world to accept Jesus Christ as their savior? To see Jesus as the life that has come from God the Father? Would mankind see the glory of God if it was so obviously manifested, an angel descending from heaven emanating light like the sun? Could the light be spiritual but still able to rach the hearts of men in the same manner that God works in mankind without mankind being aware of it?
Jn. 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Again, not referring to physical light and dark. Again, the light under consideration is the light of life; which delivers people from the darkness, death.
Jn. 12:37-46 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. 42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: 43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. 44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
Isaiah said, God has blinded their eyes, ... that they should not see with their eyes; which means they are in darkness. Jesus says that He is come a light into the world that whosoever believes on Him will not remain in darkness.
Again, the darkness is not the darkness of the night. It is an inability to see the condition of their lives, repent, be converted, and allow God to heal them. Oddly it is the light of life that blinds those that refuse to see Jesus!
The angel lightens the world, is this maybe the final opportunity for the world to accept Jesus Christ as their savior? 2nd repetition of this phrase.
Looking at the same event (eternal life and eternal death) from a different perspective.
2 Corinthians 4:1-6 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Such a beautiful passage, some interesting lessons can be learned from this. If our gospel is hid, it is hid to them that are lost, in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, … should shine unto them.
Verse 6: God who commanded the light to shine out darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
One of those wonderful things found in the scriptures. In Genesis 1:3 God said ...
Genesis 1:1-3 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
God has been bringing light into darkness since the beginning, see the book of beginning (Genesis). It is God that commanded and said, let there be light, and it is the light that the darkness cannot overcome (John 1:4).
Amazingly this story from the creation is applicable today when speaking about Jesus and the life that is found in Him.
Light = knowledge, life, Jesus: Darkness = ignorance, death, satan.
Verse 3: But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
Hid = 2572 kalupto {kal-oop'-to} Meaning: 1) to hide, veil 1a) to hinder the knowledge of a thing Origin: akin to 2813 and 2928; TDNT - 3:536,405; v Usage: AV - cover 5, hide 3; 8
If, is not a word that is used to make a definite statement. If the gospel is veiled; a statement that paints a fascinating picture, it questions whether the gospel can truly be covered (veiled). If the veil worked then nobody would be saved. But, there is a valid question, if the gospel is veiled.
... it is veiled to them that are lost.
But if the gospel is veiled it is veiled in the minds of the lost. So the veil is only partially successful and then only in the minds of those that do not want know more. The good news is that people are still being saved!
Verse 4: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
The god of this world has no desire to care for the people of this world, that is not his desire. The adversary of old is very busy trying to destroy all that God created because it is the Lord’s work.
... blinded the minds of them ...
Blinded = 5186 tuphloo {toof-lo'-o} Meaning: 1) to blind, make blind 2) in the NT metaph. to blunt the mental discernment, darken the mind Origin: from 5185; TDNT - 8:270,1196; v Usage: AV - blind 3; 3
It is interesting how this discussion keeps taking us back to the mind, which could also be called the inner man. If the gospel is veiled, it is veiled in the minds, ...
Does this also suggest that the god of this world success is determined by the individual? Why is the veil effective on some but not on others? Are some people willing to allow themselves to be blinded? Happy to live in their own enlightenment, going through life with their eyes wide closed to the spiritual realm in which they dwell. Déjà vu all over again.
... which believe not ...
Appears to be equivalent to those which are lost in the 3rd verse. But could also include people of faith, as seen in the discussion below.
Believe not = 571 apistos {ap'-is-tos} Meaning: 1) unfaithful, faithless, (not to be trusted, perfidious) 2) incredible 2a) of things 3) unbelieving, incredulous 3a) without trust (in God) Origin: from 1 (as a negative particle) and 4103; TDNT - 6:174,849; adj Usage: AV - that believe not 6, unbelieving 5, faithless 4, unbeliever 4, infidel 2, thing incredible 1, which believe not 1; 23
Looking at the usages of the word is quite interesting. The first three uses of this word tell of the same event in three different gospels, Jesus says it of the disciples, representative of the current generation of God’s people.
-
Matt. 17:16-21 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless (571) and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief (570): for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Fascinating; believers that do not believe! How to understand this dilemma? It appears that there can be a limit to an individual’s faith – belief. Really think about this, the people of God can have less-faith; the faithful can have less faith in the face of God’s incredible power and times of extreme trials, as we read in Matthew 17:16-21 above.
Jn. 20:27-28 27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless (571), but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Thomas was at a moment when the limitations of his faith were presented with the reality of the power of God. Thomas decided to move forward in faith. The other option was to stay in the same place, the place of familiarity and comfort, and be faithless.
Acts 26:1-8 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: 2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: 3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. 4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; 5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible (571) with you, that God should raise the dead?
The use of the word ‘incredible’ to render ‘faithless’ helps with this sense of the word being discussed. Is raising the dead really an incredible thing for God too do? No. But remember the limits of individual faith.
... lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ ...
The veil over the minds is to prevent the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ from entering into their minds. The mind needs to be changed. The light is the glorious gospel of Christ shining forth the way of salvation.
Remember that the mind and the heart are both referring to the inner man.
Wonder how the god of this world accomplishes this? He keeps the people of the world from seeing the glory of God and Jesus Christ by keeping them busy looking at, and doing other things. Look, squirrel.
The second verse shows the completed judgement.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
It seems that this judgement was rapid and unexpected.
Rev. 18:8-10 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. 9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
Rev. 18:17-21 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! 19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. 20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. 21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
Is this reference to the city of Babylon (verse 10) referring to a physical city somewhere on the earth today, or the system that came from that city of old? A system of commerce, that relies on credit (banking) and insurance; that eventually has as much or more power than the princes and rulers of the nations (verses 11-19). Enough of this question, it is not the important question. The important question is next ...
Rev. 18:4-5 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. 5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
This is great, and the implications of this warning are enormous if a person wants to consider the mystery of it. The warning given is intended to be taken now rather than later. How much time do the people of God have to do as God has instructed? How soon should the word of God be heeded?
Come, is in the imperative mood, that means that it is a command. Come out of her, my people, … is God commanding His people. The people of God need to separate themselves from Babylon, i.e. the world in which they live. If you wonder what Babylon is, look around at the evil world in which we dwell.
2 Cor. 6:14-7:1 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Here is another warning, a warning to be followed today rather than later. The people of God need to separate themselves from the world in which they live. Are the people of God worried about missing some great thing in the world in which they live, the next electronic gadget, the next automobile, shoes, clothes, house, monetary gain? Then the battle is already lost, ... God said, touch not the unclean thing, ... what is the unclean thing a person may ask, it is anything that is of the world.
Rev. 16:14-16 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
This warning is given in the middle of a discussion of the vials of God’s wrath. Theoretically the faithful have been taken from the earth prior to this, but what happens the people of God are not watching and keeping their garment?
What a blessing this study has been. No single subject was discussed in its entirety, but it is the hope of the author that the hearer/reader has gained some insight from that which was discussed.
If it was not made clear already, the Lord’s Prayer is all about the Almighty God, whom His people call Father. Even the part ‘For the benefit of mankind’, is regarding the Father, because the things discussed in ‘For the benefit of mankind’ are preparing the people of God to spend eternity with Our Father.
